Tormentors are powerful neutral creep bosses that, unlike other neutral creeps, are incapable of moving or attacking. Despite this, they are difficult to take down due to their quickly regenerating barriers and their very potent damage reflection. Also, each time they get defeated, they come back stronger.
Defeating a Tormentor rewards one hero with an Aghanim's Shard, or with team gold and experience if all heroes have their upgrades already, making it quite worthwhile to take them on. However, doing so takes team coordination and planning due to their unique way of defending themselves.
Abilities[]
Passive
Self
- The Tormentor has a universal damage barrier that absorbs damage values of all damage types, causing several on-damage effects to not trigger within its capacity.
- Reflects all damage dealt, including damage of non-hero units.
- Reflects incoming damage before all manipulations. However, damage manipulation on the enemy still affects the damage normally.
- Reflects the same damage type as received.
- Reflected physical damage is affected by damage block as well.
- Does not affect Couriers.
- The reflecting damage hits all heroes within 1200 radius of the Tormentor.
- Treats illusions, clones and creep-heroes as heroes.
- The reflecting damage also always hits the unit dealing the original damage, regardless of distance and regardless of unit type, except for wards.
- The reflecting amount dealt to each eligible target is reduced by a factor equal to the number of targets except illusions.
- In other words, nearby illusions do not reduce the reflecting amount while also taking damage. Moreover, this ability deals 2 times as much damage to illusions.
- If the damage source is not a hero and there is no hero among all reflected targets (including creep-heroes, illusions, and clones), it gets instantly killed.
- This includes all summons, wards, dominated creeps, and lane creeps.
- The reflected damage has the following flags:
- No-reflection flag, preventing its damage from interacting with other sources of damage with the same flag.
- No-spell-lifesteal flag, preventing its damage from utilizing spell lifesteal.
- No-spell-amplification flag, preventing its damage from being amplified with spell damage amplification.
- Damage is split evenly between all valid units in the area of effect.
- The burn damage is provided by an aura. Its debuff lingers for 0.5 seconds.
- Deals damage in 0.2 second intervals starting 0.2 seconds after the debuff is placed.
Locations[]
The Tormentors spawn from pits with lens shutter gates. The pits are located on the west and east edges of the map, directly on the side paths next to the off lanes, on the same height as the Tier 2 Towers. The side paths can be accessed directly through the bases via the Defender's Gates by the respective teams. A Watcher is located right in front of the Tormentor pits.
The pits themselves are visible through the fog of war at all times, and reveal the Tormentors' current alive status, closing when they die, and opening again once they respawn. The ▶️ spawn and ▶️ death sound effects are audible through the fog of war as well.
Spawning and Respawning[]
The Tormentors initially spawn at the 20:00 minute mark, and then respawn 10 minutes after being killed. Unlike with other neutral creeps, their respawning cannot be prevented by any means. Since the pit is visible through the fog of war, players can easily check when the Tormentor has respawned without requiring vision.
Kill Rewards[]
When a Tormentor is killed, one of the two lowest net worth players within that team who don't already have Aghanim's Shard is granted an Aghanim's Shard - Roshan for free. This gets announced in all chat. The Aghanim's Shard is instantly applied and does not need to be activated, it does not appear as an item in the player's inventory. When selecting a Tormentor, the Aghanim's Shard is visible in its inventory. Spirit Bear can also be granted the Aghanim's Shard.
If all players of that team already have their Aghanim's Shard upgrade, the whole team gains 280 and 280XP instead. The player who gets the last hit also gets its regular kill bounty, effectively gaining 530 . The experience is directly granted to all players of the team regardless of distance, it does not work other regular experience bounties. The team gold and experience are granted even when the player's hero is dead.
Trivia[]
- The Aghanim's Shard - Roshan was, as the name already implies, originally dropped by Roshan as a reward prior to the 7.33 gameplay patch.
- Since it is not a structure but a creep, it can be hexed. When hexed, unlike Roshan, it turns into a small, creep sized critter and the gate underneath it temporarily closes until hex expires.
- The Tormentors are simply named "miniboss" within the game files.
- Their model file is named "Divine Sentinel Cube".
- Monkey King can transform to Tormentor with Mischief.
