▶️ Who calls the dragon knight?
Sir Davion hears the beckoning of battle

Davion is the Dragon Knight, a title that represents both his occupation and his dual nature. A seasoned warrior of the Scaled Knights of Uthorian, Sir Davion is best known for being the one chosen vessel of Slyrak's essence, enhancing his knightly skills with a dragon's strength and granting him the powers of an elder dragon.

Biography

Dragon Knight minimap icon Davion, the Dragon Knight
After years on the trail of a legendary Eldwurm, the Knight Davion found himself facing a disappointing foe: the dreaded Slyrak had grown ancient and frail, its wings tattered, its few remaining scales stricken with scale-rot, its fangs ground to nubs, and its fire-gouts no more threatening than a pack of wet matchsticks.

Seeing no honor to be gained in dragon-murder, Knight Davion prepared to turn away and leave his old foe to die in peace. But a voice crept into his thoughts, and Slyrak gave a whispered plea that Davion might honor him with death in combat. Davion agreed, and found himself rewarded beyond expectation for his act of mercy: As he sank his blade in Slyrak's breast, the dragon pierced Davion's throat with a talon. As their blood mingled, Slyrak sent his power out along the Blood Route, sending all its strength and centuries of wisdom to the knight. The dragon's death sealed their bond and Dragon Knight was born. The ancient power slumbers in the Dragon Knight Davion, waking when he calls it. Or perhaps it is the Dragon that calls the Knight…

Battle against Uldorak

Many years before his meeting with Slyrak, Sir Davion fought the tyrannical Time-Dragon Uldorak. Long ago, in the kingdom of Candoness, Uldorak fell upon the kingdom every time the Candonite Crown was passed to demand tribute in the form of gold and magic trinkets. Ever since, the people of Candoness were cowed by the dragon and submitted to it. But Dowager Queen Tansis XII no longer suffered its tyranny and thus summoned Sir Davion to ambush Uldorak on the coronation day of her son Tansis XIII. Confident that Candoness will never oppose it, Uldorak was caught by surprise when Sir Davion ambushed it. After slaying it in battle, Sir Davion was rewarded the Wyrm Helm of Uldorak (among other gifts) by the newly crowned and relieved King Tansis XIII.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

Personality and Mannerisms

Nobility

  • The source of Sir Davion's unique nobility is the fusion of the Eldwurms' vast wisdom with his own valor as an ageless knight.[7]
  • Many are the practices that Knight Davion exercises to display courtesy and honor to his opponent, even in the most chaotic and savage battlefields.
    • Sir Davion sometimes invokes the honor of the “ancients” in battle, perhaps to show his respect to these mysterious entities.[8]
    • An honorable combatant, Sir Davion takes it upon himself to tell his opponent they fought and died with honor.[9][10][11]
    • Apparently, he lets his foes know that it was him who killed them by showing his face to their dying eyes, probably implying he doesn't condone backstabbery.[12]
    • Once Sir Davion has engaged himself in battle, he will commit to it until it has ended, never stowing away his sword until he has drawn blood with it.[13]
    • Knight Davion is known to show mercy to foes that he believes have suffered enough, although his mercy comes in the form of death.[14][15]
  • As mentioned earlier, Sir Davion is a valorous knight with his strong heart,[16][17] whose formidable bravery and honor persists until he has perished.[18][19]
  • When he is given a new life after death, Davion uses it as an opportunity to redeem his honor[20] and prove his own valor.[21]
  • Some of his armor is forged from dragon remains to posthumously honor these beasts who have died in battle.[22] Wearing such armor to battle is considered an honor.[23]
  • Because of the above qualities, some Heroes call Sir Davion a do-gooder.[24][25] Lyralei states that Davion is a kind person.[26]

Draconic inclinations

  • Even when he isn't a dragon, Davion feels inclined to collect gold for his hoard.[27][28][29] In rare occasions, he may spend the gold on something equally valuable.[30]
  • He inherits the immense self-respect of dragons as he dislikes turning into a dragon to let others ride him in that form,[31] since dragons dislike being debased to mounts.[32]

Wisdom

  • Infused with Slyrak's own blood, Sir Davion inherits centuries' worth of wisdom from the Eldwurms,[7] including skills said to be beyond mortal knowledge.[33][34]
  • Davion has a saying about war: “Steel wins battles, gold wins wars.”[35] This could mean that battles are won with soldiers, but larger scale conflicts are won with money.
  • Despite the above saying about the power of money, Sir Davion believes that money is useless in the afterlife.[36]
  • According to Davion, victory is inherent in strength.[37] He could simply be saying that strength is a guarantee for victory.

Skills

  • Sir Davion achieving mastery over dragons during battle would not be possible were it not for him achieving mastery of his self.[38]
  • Well armored though he may be, Davion is truly protected not by his plates, but rather by his faith, perhaps placed on his own success or the abilities he uses to achieve it.[39]
  • The Dragon Knight may wield a blade sharp enough to cut through the toughest scales and hide, but it is nothing to the sharpness of his mind when he fights dragons.[40]

Relationships

Slyrak the Eldwurm

Long before their transfusion, Knight Davion and Elder Dragon Form icon Slyrak were long time nemeses, the former's hunt for the dragon spanning for uncounted years. His lonely pursuit culminated in a disappointing end when he found Slyrak in his lair, weak and sick from centuries of existence. Although he was his enemy, Davion still had the heart to spare Slyrak from a death by his blade and left him to die in peace. The Eldwurm thought otherwise, and pleaded Davion to honor him with death in combat. Davion agreed, but his naively mercy had him tricked into having his blood spilt by Slyrak's talon piercing his throat that he can cheat death while entrusting him with his power. Davion learned from this encounter that a deal with a dragon is dangerous if you can't honor your part of the transaction.[41]

Since Davion shares Slyrak's greed, it seems this knight also shares ownership of the hoard in the Eldwurm's lair.[27][28][29][30] Besides contributing to Slyrak's hoard, Sir Davion also melts down the collected gold for his armor.[42] Relatedly, Davion carries dragon-forged equipment, including a suit of armor[43] (which is said to harbor the sleeping Slyrak inside it, but “within this armor” could refer to his body which is covered by it[44]) and the shield of Slyrak[45] which is made from dragon scales, possibly Slyrak's.[46]

When Davion dies in battle, he will blame Slyrak with his last breath for failing him.[47]

With dragons

Sylla states that Davion is of Dragon Clan.[48][49] He may have made the assumption from his dragon-attuned shapeshifting, like himself being from Bear Clan as a bear shapeshifter.

Through the Blood Route, Davion is infused with centuries' worth of wisdom from the Eldwurms.[7] He has some sort of kinship with the Eldwurms, since he joins them in death.[50]

The Dragon Knight has a disdainful rivalry with the dragon freak Jakiro minimap icon Jakiro because they view him as a half-breed.[51][52][53][54][55] Ironically, Jakiro is shocked that Dragon Knight would kill his own kind, despite not considering him among dragons and the fact that he is a dragonslayer.[56][57]

A creature who is over millions of years old, Puck minimap icon Puck sees the ancient Slyrak as a juvenile dragon.[58] In Dota Underlords, it seems to be curious about Slyrak hiding inside Davion and it is interested in meeting him in the flesh.[59] Puck may inquire Davion about his “condition” which might be referring to Slyrak inhabiting his body.[60] It seems that Puck wishes to meet him so that they may “play” together.[61] As a hostile, Puck threatens to rip out the Eldwurm from his vessel to fulfill its intentions with him.[62]

A fellow eldwurm, Winter Wyvern minimap icon Winter Wyvern is familiar with Slyrak and thinks Davion is nothing like him.[63] She implies he or they did something wrong, which she brings retribution to.[64]

With knights

It's heavily implied that Sir Davion belongs to the Scaled Knights of Uthorian, since his belongings and equipment bears their distinguished dragon's crest.[65][66] Despite having the lifeblood of his order's enemy, he still carries their crest in his camp and gear. It's possible he was exiled from his knighthood for his condition, hence his loneliness.

In all his aeons, Chaos Knight minimap icon Chaos Knight claims he has never seen a knight like Davion.[67] Regardless, he finds him worthy of his plates[68] and his respect,[69] but mocks his lack of a steed.[70]

As allies, Omniknight minimap icon Omniknight appreciates Sir Davion's assistance in battle,[71] but as enemies, Purist believes that Slyrak and his blood are impurities on Davion's body and thus his soul.[72]

A knightly rivalry, Sven minimap icon Sven has issues with Davion's dragon nature interfering with his knighthood and considers him unworthy to be a knight.[73][74][75][76] On the other hand, Davion believes he is the superior knight between them[77][78] and humbles him on what he knows about battling dragons.[79]

Family

Exile Unveiled Phantom Assassin minimap icon Asan implies that Davion is an orphan when he says their shared orphanhood won't make them allies, just like his counterpart in the animated series.[80]

Acquaintances

Exile Unveiled Phantom Assassin minimap icon Asan finds Davion formidable in both his knight form and dragon form. Hence, he invites him to kill some assassins from the corrupted Sisters of the Veil.[81]

Dawnbreaker minimap icon Dawnbreaker has heard of Davion's ironic failure with killing Slyrak and is curious about his fellow Dragon Knights' response to it.[82]

Monkey King minimap icon Monkey King has heard of the famous Dragon Knight (perhaps from stories) and loves watching him turn into Slyrak and wreak carnage,[83] but he's disappointed if he bests him in battle[84] (but sometimes he expects it, given he has defeated gods[85]). Nevertheless, he does want to ride to battle on his back as a dragon,[86] but he was refused.[31]

Pangolier minimap icon Pangolier likes the coloring of Davion's dragon armor.[87] He's curious about how he felt when he realized Slyrak tricked him[88] and asks him if he still hunts dragons or not now that he is one of them, which he assumes would make him feel guilty.[89]

Siltbreaker Siltbreaker icon Siltbreaker doesn't find the legendary Dragon Knight impressive, but thinks otherwise about the mighty Eldwurm dwelling inside him.[90]

Ursa minimap icon Ursa recognizes the power that was given to the Dragon Knight, telling him that he is squandering this great gift if he dies.[91]

Void Spirit minimap icon Void Spirit conveys his respect to the ancient power of Slyrak that inhabits Davion's being, although only after beating him in battle.[92]

Allies

Lycan minimap icon Lycan believes that shapeshifters like him and Davion should stick together.[93]

Another shapeshifter known as the Lone Druid minimap icon Lone Druid is pleased to see Davion of Dragon Clan,[48] but does not suffer them standing against him.[49]

The demon marauder Terrorblade minimap icon Terrorblade appreciates having dragon allies by his side, including Sir Davion and Slyrak within him.[94]

Enemies

Fearing what could happen if nearby dragons ever took a vested interest in White Spire, Anessix mini icon Anessix compelled Davion with her mind control to kill a bunch of dragons.[95] Her control wore off and Davion realized what he had done, enraged by the demon's actions. To avenge the slain dragons, he turned into Slyrak and rallied his dragon allies to punish Anessix. But this was unsuccessful as the Early Bird newspaper reports that Anessix defeated them.[96]

Bristleback minimap icon Bristleback hates knights, including Davion.[97]

In Dota Underlords, Lich minimap icon Lich has eagerly anticipated his fight with Slyrak for a long time.[98] This may be linked to a plot where he did something wrong to Auroth, a fellow Eldwurm.[99]

Sir Davion punishes Lina minimap icon Lina for enslaving dragons, which could be a reference to her Dragon Slave icon Dragon Slave.[100] He humbles her on her lesser knowledge of dragons.[101]

Apparently, someone told Pudge minimap icon Pudge that Davion's title is a “double entrée” which he shares to him. He probably made that up to tell him that he's going have a taste.[102]

With the Vengeful Spirit minimap icon Vengeful Spirit always in his heart, Skywrath Mage minimap icon Skywrath Mage finds it brazen that Davion gets to have wings from Slyrak while Shendelzare has none, believing that she is more deserving of flight.[103] Shendelzare has similar sentiments as Davion's enemy,[104][105] but as allies, she wishes to lend his wings to soar the skies even for a bit.[106]

Other Characteristics

Equipment

The original suit of armor that Sir Davion wears is dragon's armor[43] which he may decorate with the gold that he collects and melts down.[42] It is said by Davion that Slyrak sleeps within this armor, meaning that he dwells inside the suit itself. However, “within this armor” could refer to his body which is covered by his armor.[44] Nevertheless, he wields his sword Wyrmblade and the shield of Slyrak (which is forged from scales, possibly the scales of Slyrak himself[46]), both of which he swears by in battle.[45][107] His shield is often his most important weapon (even more so than his sword) as it protects him from dragons who will never wait for their enemy and strike first.[108] Thesos recovered fragments of an old shield that looks similar to Davion's in a young dragon's gullet, implying that he lost it to said dragon while fighting it on a grain farmer's property near the lands of Thesos' father.[66]

During the time surrounding his battle with Time-Dragon Uldorak who terrorized Candoness for generations, Davion carried a set of special equipment. During the day he fought and killed the dragon, he carried the Wyrm Shield of Uldorak.[3] He may have also brought a mighty Named Sword called Dragonmaw, whose blade was lined with jagged teeth that can rip through the strongest hides and bare the vulnerable flesh beneath.[6] After its death, the much relieved and newly crowned King Tansis XIII of Candoness awarded him with the Wyrm Helm of Uldorak which he ordered to be forged for Sir Davion as a gift.[1] Some of Uldorak's remains were used to craft Davion's new armor, such as a pair of pauldrons that bear the dragon's crest horns.[4][2][5]

Knight Davion wears a suit of armor that combines metal and bones to protect him. This includes shoulder armor that is a skilled artist's rendition of a dragon's shoulder,[109] a gilded helm with what appears to be a dragon's jawbone,[110] and a pair of vambraces forged from the finest gold of a dragon.[111] Complementing the armor is a sword with a very keen edge that's fit for a slayer of dragons.[112]

Davion owns a set of crimson colored equipment that is forged from the Crimson Wyvern's remains. This includes a suit of armor consisting of a pair of bracers crafted from the interlocking scales on top of its spine,[113] shoulder armor constructed from its scales,[114] a protective skirt,[115] and a helm that was designed after the Crimson Wyvern's likeness.[116] Weapons derived from the wyvern's remains include a sword forged from its talons[117] and an ancient shield that captures the wyvern's likeness on its front.[118]

Last, Sir Davion owns a set of drake-themed equipment imbued with honor. The suit of armor is composed of a pair of bracers made from the scales of a drake's underbelly (which is an honor to wear to battle),[23] a colorful cape designed in honor of all the drakes who died in battle,[22] pauldrons that bear the visage of a fallen drake,[119] a helmet forged from the iron that chained the last of the great Drakinds (making it valuable and coveted among dragon slayers),[120] a shield that bears the face of a drake that's forged in silver, jeweled with crimsonstone, and enchanted with deep protection magic,[121] plus a powerful sword that is counted among the dozen extant swords that have slain more than one dragon.[122]

Sir Davion possesses a crimson sword forged from the grand dragon Vyxia's scales and teeth. The edge of its blade is stained and heated by her fiery blood on it.[123]

Among Davion's swords is the Ember Edge. Its blade perpetually glows from an unknown heat and thus it is said to be a source of warmth and a beacon in the darkness.[124]

Davion owns a big and heavy shield that is made from dragon-forged steel which he brings to war.[125]

Death and Immortality

To Davion, night is his general metaphor for death.[126][127] Scale loss (an ailment found in old and dying dragons, like Slyrak) is also a metaphor he uses for death.[128] He also believes death has swift wings.[129] A man of honor, Davion wishes those he has slain to be ushered to their final place of rest by the Eldwurms.[130] Conversely, he joins the Eldwurms when he dies, implying these wise dragons are long dead and exist beyond the veil of death.[50] When he dies in battle, he seeks the following burial traditions to be fulfilled: placing scales upon his eyes[131] and burying his body on his shield.[132]

It is mentioned in passing that Davion is ageless.[7] It's implied Slyrak can resurrect through unknown means after Davion's death, but no such luck for the knight.[133]

Powers

Breathe Fire

A simple but devastating gift from Slyrak's transfusion, Davion inherits his power to Breathe Fire icon Breathe Fire, capable of scorching knights,[134] lesser dragons,[66] and icy empires alike.[135]

In spite of these terrifying and legendary feats of Slyrak's infernal exhalation, it's unknown if the Eldwurm's natural abilities are diluted in the lesser body of Sir Davion or not.

Dragon Tail

With the shield of Slyrak, Knight Davion viciously smites foes with the strength of a Dragon Tail icon Dragon Tail, a combination of Slyrak's talents and his knightly skill.[136]

The heat of Davion's resolve is so powerful that it briefly combines the elemental and terrene planes as one, harnessing the element of flame as a result.[137]

Dragon Blood

The source of his draconic power, Slyrak's Dragon Blood icon Dragon Blood flows through Davion's veins, imbuing him with twice the vitality of an ordinary knight[138] and transformative power.[139]

Fireball

Fireball icon Fireball has no special lore whatsoever.

Elder Dragon Form

Davion awakens the dragon within to assume his Elder Dragon Form icon Elder Dragon Form thanks to Slyrak's magic blood,[139] combining his powers with Slyrak.[140] Besides Slyrak's red scales and his fire breath, he may manifest with green scales and corrosive spit or blue scales and icy breath. Aghanim's Scepter icon Aghanim's Scepter allows him to transform into a black dragon, although this has yet to be reflected in the lore.

Slyrak lies asleep within Sir Davion until the knight calls to him, while Sir Davion waits within Slyrak until the Eldwurm calls him. Davion warns against awakening them both, which can provoke an unknown but terrifying consequence.[44]

It's possible that Slyrak's different forms are actually different dragon species classified by their scale color and breath attack. Seeing how they all have the same appearance even with the difference in scale color and powers, the three Elder Dragon Forms of Slyrak may belong to a common species. This is supported by the fact that Slyrak doesn't have a unique appearance, since the lesser one of the two dark blue dragons mentioned in Thesos' logs resembled the form of Slyrak.[66] Further supporting this is the power in Slyrak's blood that allows Davion to draw strength not just from one dragon but also from the oldest ancestral dragon strains, implying that his dragon blood gives him access to a vast and diverse lineage of Dragons that Slyrak belongs to.[139]

Snapfire has noted that Davion's transformation looks painful, implying that Davion doesn't just cover himself in smoke and come out as a dragon like in the game.[141] One can only imagine what his transformation looks like and how it feels to him...

  • With the unusually magic-rich blood of Slyrak whose effects are magnified and distorted, Davion can draw strength and transformative power not only from Slyrak alone but also from the oldest ancestral strains of dragon, such as the Kindred of the Iron Dragon Elder Dragon Form icon Iron Dragons.[139]
  • When meeting Sir Davion, Morphling minimap icon Morphling will compare himself to the former, saying that both of them are "always changing".[142] He might be referring to Davion's transformative power and how it's not limited to just one dragon form, just like Morphling's unlimited forms. This may further explain the various forms and powers that Slyrak might have when he springs forth from Davion.
