Upcoming changes - migration onto Gamepedia platform
Hey guys. Curse have been moving to their existing wiki's to their Gamepedia platform, and we are scheduled to be moved on to that platform in the next 4-6 weeks.
On the front-end this will manifest itself with two major changes:
- Our domain will change to dota2.gamepedia.com, and our existing domain will act as a forwarder.
- The MediaWiki accounts system will be replaced with a unified Curse.com account system.
- Instructions on how to merge your MediaWiki and Curse account will be released once the migration is complete. It is possible your username could be taken, so make sure you register or recover your Curse.com account as soon as possible.
On the back-end the Gamepedia platform is a lot better for resource and extension management, which means the wiki's performance will improve and any technical requests we make will be dealt with quicker.
Any questions, throw them below. -RJ 19:04, 15 May 2013 (UTC)
- By forwarded do you mean a 302 or just a simple A record/CNAME on the dota2wiki.com record. Please be meaning the latter. Please. -- Lagg
21:49, 19 May 2013 (UTC)
- 302, but I have since asked for the latter. -RJ 23:36, 19 May 2013 (UTC)
- Hi I'm one of the DevOps guys that handled the migration, I'd love to know why you prefer A/CNAME over 302s. --MentalPower (talk) 20:10, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
Notice We now have Dota 2 Wiki:Gamepedia detailing the changes, and it will be linked to from a sitenotice 2 weeks prior to the migration. -RJ 18:43, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
Demonstration videos
Hey guys. I've set up a dictionary and the necessary templates to display demonstration videos on relevant pages, with DotaCinema's video links as a place-holder for now. Reading the previous discussion about showing DotaCinema's videos nobody was overly against it, but the reasons against were: 1) A big video-block detracts from the page's quality/readability/conciseness. 2) The Wiki should be an independent resource and shouldn't favour any particular entity's content.
With regards to #1, we can add some javascript and a collapsible table that tracks per-user whether that user wants video-blocks open or collapsed and automagically collapse or show video-blocks across the Wiki accordingly; but we also need to figure out where on pages we should show that video-block. I have the demonstration system set up right now for Hero introductions and courier previews, for courier previews it can just go above the gallery - those pages don't have a ton of content, but for hero pages the placement is a bit more important - I think the two main places it could belong is collapsed by default and above hero abilities; or not collapsed by default and below hero abilities.
With regards to point #2, I think this is a valid concern and I agree we do not want to open the gates to any average joe using their own video; on the TF2 Wiki we produce our own videos because of that fact, but here we don't have the resources to do that so I think the next best thing is partnering with somebody and strictly sticking with them. Arguments for showing these videos would be that they're super useful and making these videos more accessible, by adding them to the Wiki, would be of great benefit to our visitors. Arguments for going with DotaCinema is that their videos are arguably the most appropriate for the Wiki - they're short, concise, of great quality, and DotaCinema has the largest collection of these short videos, and they're all in a consistent format.
So, given the last discussion seemingly fell quiet with no clear consensus either way, I think the topic is worth us revisiting; and I won't be rolling out these videos until we've resolved whether or not we should actually have them. If we end up deciding we do want these videos and we want DotaCinema providing them, I'll get in contact with DotaCinema and make sure they are OK with us using their videos before I implement them onto our pages.
Please throw your opinions below: -RJ 19:27, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
We should have video blocks on pages?
Agree I think hero overviews are a great resource for the community and us making them more accessible will end up being greatly useful for our visitors. The cosmetic/courier videos only really show animations/particle effects better than we are capable of doing with only static images, and they won't detract from cosmetic pages so I don't see a problem with having those either. -RJ 19:27, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
Agree on hero overview pages - videos are far more capable of explaining concepts than written text. If a picture says a thousand words, a one second clips says thirty thousand words.
Neutral on the cosmetic/courier videos, as I think that that section needs a major overhaul where videos do not necessarily fit. - Hefaistus 21:13, 8 June 2013 (UTC)
DotaCinema?
Agree As said above, I think they're the best quality and in the most appropriate format from the community so far. -RJ 19:27, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
Agree I also think that DotaCinema provides guides that currently of the highest quality available. On top of that, they already have quite a following in the community, which should help with acceptation during and after integration. - Hefaistus 21:13, 8 June 2013 (UTC)
Placement on hero pages
- I think collapsed above-abilities is probably the best place to put them. Having it collapsed will mean it doesn't visually detract from the rest of the page, but having it near the top of the page will make it more noticable and more likely to be seen and watched by those who wish to watch the videos. -RJ 19:27, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
- I've placed some examples here User:Robjackson/Video_examples; the above-abiltiites one being collapsible and collapsed by default, the other two not being collapsible at all. -RJ 21:14, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
- I think that it would be best to put them above the abilities. People that only need general information will then find it speedily, while those looking for more in-depth information would go through the trouble of scrolling for the abilities anyway. That being said, I think that the current 'hide'-implementation needs to be reconsidered, because it currently is rather counter-intuitive with it being right next to the '[edit]'-tag that is closer to the section than 'show'. Heck, put it in a table much alike equipment if there's no other way, but I can't see the current implementation working very well. - Hefaistus 21:13, 8 June 2013 (UTC)
Matchmaking status?
Does anybody have an idea on how the normal, high pool and very high pool works? Is it by the higher the level, the higher the pool or # of wins. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by 122.106.49.106 (talk) • (contribs) 04:07, June 16, 2013
- Skill level. Also, this discussion is irrelevant to the Dota 2 Wiki, which this page is for discussing (and not general questions about the game). Bring your general Dota 2 questions to a general Dota 2 community. --

Recommended Items keyword for each Item Page
Wouldn't it be great if each item contained 1 line that says what you add in your: Steam>Steamapps>Common>Dota 2 beta>dota>itembuilds>"default_[hero name].txt" recommended items guide?
For example, to add tranquil boots to your recommended items list you would open the .txt and add in the category you wish:
"#DOTA_Item_Build_Early_Game" { "item" "item_boots" "item" "item_bracer" "item" "item_bracer"
"item" "item_tranquil_boots"
}
This would make dota2wiki even more complete. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by 99.237.251.207 (talk) • (contribs)
- I'm not sure I understand what you're suggesting; I don't see any benefit to listing the game's internal item name alongside recommended items. -RJ 12:02, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
Issues after migration
There are some errors in non-english articles:
Phantom Lancer/ru
1. Errors in hero stats. 2. Equipment is not working. 3. template DISPLAYTITLE (for russian pages) is not working as well.
And small and not important question. Am I still administrator on the wiki? --ERmachdp (talk) 21:44, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
4. There are no rarity colours on items. 5. Corrupted nav templates on item pages. (f.e. The Blood Shard) --ERmachdp (talk) 07:44, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- Displaytitle is likely just a MediaWiki variable being reset to default on the new Gamepedia config, it should be an easy fix. The rest look related to Semantic MediaWiki to me, it seems to not be returning data on some articles and I'm not sure why. I'll have it looked in to, and yes you should still be administrator - your account is still flagged as admin; what makes you think you're not?
- Here are some test-cases of SMW not returning results, for our buddies at Curse to dig into :3

- As a follow-up to this, and to document what I said over Skype - I think the duplicate SMW query results could be because SMW, when querying a category, is also querying any sub-categories that category might have; this behaviour didn't seem to occur previously so it's either a change with a Semantic MediaWiki upgrade, or it's something skipped over when configuring the Gamepedia site. This behaviour can be disabled by settings
$smwgUseCategoryHierarchy
to false in our configuration. -RJ 09:42, 30 June 2013 (UTC)- I dunno about that. I don't think
$smwgUseCategoryHierarchy
is the issue. For example, compare Category:Agility_heroes to the semantic query for the pages in that category. There are no subcategories to complicate the matter, and yet there are some duplicate results. I think the two most likely causes are (1) database corruption caused by the transition or (2) a bug in this version of SMW, which is newer than the one we were using before. If the problem is DB corruption, then rebuilding semantic data from Special:SMWAdmin should fix it. If the problem is a bug in SMW, we might be hitting mediazilla:48706 and mediazilla:48707 (although these bugs are technically filed against the newer, development branch of SMW). If rebuilding semantic data doesn't resolve the issue, it might be good to add this datapoint to the mediazilla bugs. It's going to be annoying if it's a bug, but it might get prompt attention if it turns out to be present on the release branch. --50.135.154.73 08:31, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
- I dunno about that. I don't think
- Have a small problem with Kunkka's set: The Commendable Commodore Set. How to delete a duplicated page? (Look in "Cosmetic Items for Kunkka" template). And how can I fix errors with hero stats in russian pages? For example - Kunkka/ru. (Expression error: Unrecognised punctuation character ",".)
- Yeah we're aware of duplicate SMW entries, see the comment I just made above - I think that's the solution. With regards to Kunkka/ru I don't see any errors there at all; if the error is still present for you try purging the pages cache with the 'Refresh' button in the dropdown next to the search box - try this on any other pages that are displaying errors too. -RJ 09:42, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
Download sound

- They work as before for me using Google Chrome (on Windows and Linux) and Firefox (on Linux). What browser and operating system are you using? -RJ 12:02, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
Opera browser. Late where was ok. Now, before listen the sound, I must download it.
- I am also having problems with the sound boxes. Rather than play the sound directly in the page, it redirects me directly to the url of the file. The boxes are also blue now, and are larger than they used to be. If you look at my userpage I have a little list set up, and the icons used to sit perfectly on top of the sound boxes, but not anymore. I'm using Chrome on Mac OS 10.8.4. --Pigbuster (talk) 23:02, 28 June 2013 (UTC)

Linked to another page when listening to voice lines, or not working at all
I believe this is not supposed to happen because sometimes it links to another page instead of just playing from the main page. Some of the sound files don't work either.
Hero Quote Sound Clips and Spell Sound Effects
Are the hero sound clips for the quotes on the pages of each hero going to come back soon? I always enjoyed listening to them whenever I went onto a hero page :)
Also, what about the addition of all sound files for all the spells in the game to the hero pages? There are already sound files for the items in the game, so spells would be great too! ILikePi (talk) 00:47, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
is this an error
Can i ask you something ? Why does it say on your heroes page that 'currently, 112 of the 112 heroes are playable in the main Dota 2 client' which is not true ? is this some sort of an error or something? — The preceding unsigned comment was added by 78.185.140.110 (talk) • (contribs)
- Yes that's an error; we think we know why (see comment about SMW and subcategories above), and we're just waiting for Curse to deploy the fix for it. :) -RJ 18:59, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for the response :)
Somehow, Abaddon's addition resulted in the glitched count now being a ridiculous "113 of the 112"... This may be an advantage, now it's so obviously wrong that even readers new to the game will probably know to not trust it. 2.11.147.197 01:07, 13 July 2013 (UTC)
- And during the time I wrote that, another IP took it upon himself to rip out the SMW query and replace it with plain text. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by 2.11.147.197 (talk) • (contribs)
- Just to make sure people know what's happening regarding this: it turns out there were problems with the old SMW support tools that were installed, so when we tried rebuilding the SMW data before it wasn't actually doing anything useful. Curse have fixed this and they will start to rebuild the SMW data once again on Monday - they're doing it Monday to ensure they are in-office and accessible throughout the entirety of the operation, as it's estimated to between 2-5 days to repair on a data-set of our size and they want to be available in case of any new problems. -RJ 02:20, 13 July 2013 (UTC)
Template "Buy now" is not working
Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but in cosmetic items this template is not working. For example, new Clinkz's set (Lost Hills Set) - there is no template, but in old sets (Demonic Vandal's Set) its ok. What's wrong? --ERmachdp (talk) 12:22, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
- WindBOT hasn't been updating the Template:Dictionary/price and Template:Dictionary/defindex pages for about a month it seems. I think this is because WindBOT's steamodd was updated to a newer version that made significant API changes which were not backwards compatible, and the code here wasn't updated alongside that update; I've updated that code now so hopefully WindBOT will start running the filter again. -RJ 12:47, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
- Great, thanks. I thought I was doing something wrong. Thanks again. --ERmachdp (talk) 13:15, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
- Anyway, this Bot is not working. I am created this templates myself for each item, but it was good if this work made by bots. Look at newly created sets: The_Slithereen_Knight_Set and The_Northern_Wind_Set (for Windrunner I create templates myself) --ERmachdp (talk) 15:29, 4 August 2013 (UTC)
- Bot appears to be broken again, lots of recent sets haven't been updated into the price dictionary. --Missing Username (talk) 14:32, 2 October 2013 (UTC)
Need a little help
How can I get the frickin tables to show the gray background on even rows here? Hero equipment with custom animations I've experimented so much and the only thing that gives me the layout I want is tables, divs just screw everything up, but for some reason, all tables have a white background even when set to transparent. The template I created for that page is here: Template:Single-hero cosmetic item nav/item custom animation
- PS: Feel free to add to that list.
--178.202.204.152 15:47, 4 August 2013 (UTC)
- Nevermind, I finally got it! had to put background:transparent in the tag too. List is still incomplete, I'll browse items and add those that mention changing animations - but I don't know if I catch them all, so feel free to add any missing items! --178.202.204.152 16:00, 4 August 2013 (UTC)
Missing a bit of death and damage info
I've searched several expected mechanics articles and haven't been able to find specifics on two points that seem like they should be explained in this wiki. The easier expectation: respawn time. A few leads like Death go to the Gold page, which is appropriate enough since it has multiple equations. I never found an explanation for what controls respawn duration (also could probably warrant additional redirects for other pertinent searches like "respawning"). The other point of info I expected to be able to figure out from reading around is what do +damage items affect? Basic right-click attacks? All damage? Physical damage? --50.152.2.93 08:22, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
Hero page layouts
As a long reader of the wiki, and a wiki editor myself, I do like the consistency of the Dota 2 wiki's layouts for hero pages. However, I do feel like the layout is somewhat, in its current state, lacking and fairly outdated. So what I'm suggesting is a new layout that hero pages can follow, which is more detailed, informative and could allow for more consistency.
[Infobox here] [Generic intro, like current hero pages; covers the hero's general role, playstyle, like currently though some could be rewritten; should be a paragraph long] ==Overview== ===Bio=== [same template used as currently] ===Abilities=== [No changes here, aside from the potential for them to be listed in tabs? Like, first spell tab, second spell tab? May require MediaWiki extension] ===Roles=== [Rather than just listing the heroes' role (carry, support, ganker) like the intro does, this section describes the various roles the hero can fill in depth, ie "Windrunner is often played in a supporting position, however she can be laned anywhere and given farm can even carry a game herself"] ===Vulnerabilities=== [A rundown of the heroes' weaknesses, and mentions of counterpicks; ie "Lifestealer may be incredibly strong once he reaches his foes but can be beaten with through-bkb disables, for example Bane's 'Fiend's Grip' ultimate"] ==Guide== ===Tips=== [A few pages already have this section; a bunch of bullet points explaining tips on how to play the hero in certain playstyles] ===Recommended items=== [Like currently, though I feel some of these sections should be rewritten] ===Skill builds=== [As Valve don't recommend a skill build, this one would be more complex] ==Background== ===Update history=== [Unchanged] ===Balance changelog=== [Unchanged] ===Competitive play=== [A history of the hero's appearances in the pro scene, ie "Batrider was largely unseen in the competitive play after that, until his major buffs in 6.75, which caused him to dominate the scene: he had 100% pick/ban rate during The International 3."] ==Notes== ===Equipment=== [unchanged] ===Trivia=== [blah] ===Gallery=== [blah] [Navbox goes here]
So there's my input. Please tell me what you think, and as for redesigning pages in this format, I'm happy to contribute to that.--Technobliterator (talk) 19:13, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
- Sounds good to me. Need more people to check this out for consensus.--Formic.Sapien 00:45, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
Anyone else see two Anti-Mages in hero tables?
I've been getting this for a while. I'd always thought it was a cache problem but I've cleared my history a bunch of times and I'm still getting it, and I see it when I browse the site on other computers. On pages with tables generated by Semantic MediaWiki queries that list heroes, such as those on Agility and Table of Hero attributes Anti-Mage appears twice. I've done some digging and I can't identify the source of the problem. Can someone confirm that it isn't just me seeing this? --Stupid Lemon Eater 18:31, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
- It's not only you. We used to have the issue of a lot of duplicate SMW results which Curse managed to resolve however Anti-Mage remained duplicated. Curse have tried fixing it but couldn't figure it out, so we're stuck with two of him it seems. -RJ 14:35, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

What happened with item templates?
There are many problems with this template and there no fix yet. 1. Some sets and items are duplicated in this template - An old problem and I have no idea how to fix it. Sometimes I deleted the item and then create new page - sometimes it helps, sometimes not. 2. The problem that I found today - many items are hiden in template or template can't see this items. Look: Axe (Ragestone Axe), (Axe#Equipment), Omni (Omniknight#Equipment), (Winged Paladin's Armor) and etc. Yesterday, when I upload new cosmetic icons for Omni's items this templates works correctly (exept duplicated pages). greeviling 2013
i am interested when does greeviling 2013 begin?and how much will it last!write the current date if anybody knows...
We should distinguish ticket and the tournament more obvious, and make link from ticket(s) to the tournament(s)
Yesterday I wanted to check the schedule of D2LS4, so I searched for "D2L" and found HyperX D2L Season 4. It takes me several seconds to figure out it's just the ticket of this tournament, not the tournament itself. But the most inconvenient thing is that I can't really find a link to the tournament and I was thinking it may even didn't exist yet. Today I finally find it in Tournaments, with a kinda different name from the ticket (EG HyperX Dota 2 League Season 4, didn't use the term "D2L").
I think we should at least add links in the ticket page pointing to the tournament. And if we can make the ticket and tournament more distinguished in the page it will be much better (I do understand that the item's title needs to be exactly as it in the store, but we can try to mention it in the content or template).
Sorry for my bad English.--Ikenaikoto (talk) 22:13, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for your input! I'll try to make them more clear in the future. Just a note, the D2L stands for Dota 2 League, which is in the tournament title. -Hybridshiek (talk) 02:55, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
Thought: List all balance changes together
Now all the patches, despite whether balance or other types, are listed together. Nothing wrong with it but it's hard to find balance changes only. We can build pages like Version 6.79 just like liquipedia did, but it requires too much work and these pages are basically duplicated with patch pages. The simplest ways I think are:
- Make a short list in article Patches, links to all the patches which include balance changes;
- Make a category like Category:Balance Patches and tag the corresponding patches.

Video previews in item-pages.
I decided to make in item pages video previews with template "Demonstration|HsvxeyExeQg". /*name*_Announcer_Pack (except for Defense Grid, which uses /Announcer_Defense Grid)
For example GLaDOS_Announcer_Pack links you to the list of Glados' responses.
But Trine_Announcer_Pack links you to the announcer in store section.
So the responses are missing.
High load on site
What happened to Dota 2 Wiki? Every page load very long time and I can't edit some pages. When I try to save changes on page - it says "page not responding". Pressing F5 doesn't help. f.e. Russian page Treasure_Chests/ru I can edit, but English - error. And some Hero pics not displayed (I mean on Main page). --ERmachdp (talk) 15:46, 11 February 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, I've noticed this too. Sometimes when I try to submit changes to the page, it will just go to a blank page and not save anything. Not sure what's causing it. -Hybridshiek (talk) 16:20, 11 February 2014 (UTC)
New users
Since new users have restricted access, some information about the rules in place would be nice. (Maybe it's just that I can't find them?) Do I have to wait four days before I can edit a page? --Magnus (talk)
- You can start edit right now. There is no delay in days for edits. --ERmachdp (talk) 16:09, 21 February 2014 (UTC)
- Apparently not. I've tried to correct the information for Grievous Ingots both yesterday and today but I just get the following message:
- "This action has been automatically identified as harmful, and therefore disallowed. If you believe your action was constructive, please inform an administrator of what you were trying to do. A brief description of the abuse rule which your action matched is: Short pages by new users that don't have wikilinks or templates"

- Yeah, that filter is meant to stop people from vandalizing new pages, but once in a while it blocks legitimate edits. It defines new user as users who've made less than 5 edits, and I'm not gonna change it right now because it rarely causes problems. If you make 5 edits, then you should be able to edit just fine. ~ Lemoncream (talk) 16:38, 21 February 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks! Exactly what I wanted to know. --Magnus (talk)

Updating item pages
I decided to update all (!) cosmetic item pages, starting from Abaddon. I will update purchase links, autors links, set items and other stuff. Just saying. --eЯmac.hdp (talk) 12:58, 14 March 2014 (UTC)
- So I continue my work and have one question: What happened to bots, that updates price of any item? Anyway, I can update price by myself, but it very hard work and will take to much time. --eЯmac.hdp (talk) 21:01, 26 March 2014 (UTC)
Internet
I find this website quite useful, especially the responses parts of heroes which I cannot find in any other places. However, I have been unable to go to this website for 4 days while I can still surf on the internet as usual. Is it a common problem?
- Sometimes Wiki has a big load, but I personally have no any problems with this. I think its server problems, f.e. some pages loading very long time. --eЯmac.hdp (talk) 13:23, 29 March 2014 (UTC)
Dota 2 Wiki crazy...

What happened? --eЯmac.hdp (talk) 14:50, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
- SMW had to be temporarily disabled because the moving of some pages was bringing the site to a halt. -RJ 15:05, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
