Mangix, the Brewmaster, is a melee strength hero that can fill almost any role, though he is primarily seen as a carry, ganker, tank or initiator. He fits well into any lane, but is very experience dependent, which means he is often seen on the offlane or the midlane. His core abilities make him a respectable physical damage dealer and an especially good duelist since he has abilities that involve negating opposing attacks while strengthening his own. However, his true power lies in his ultimate, Primal Split, which, if used properly, can by itself turn the tide of a team fight. Each of the three aspects of the Brewmaster are exceptionally powerful, with exceptional disables, survivability against magic and physical attacks, and damage; they are also able to charge recklessly into the enemy since the damage they take is not permanent, and very rarely will all three die before Primal Split ends. For this reason, Brewmaster is almost always built to fully maximize the potential of this ultimate, getting items such as Blink Dagger so that he can combo into his ultimate without risk of being initiated on, Heart of Tarrasque to ensure he can survive the first wave of stuns and burst in order to cast his ultimate, and of course Aghanim's Scepter to give Brewmaster two charges of Primal Split and a possibility to cancel it at any time.

Bio[edit]

Brewmaster minimap icon.pngMangix, the Brewmaster
▶️ "Shall we call this off and have a friendly round?"
Deep in the Wailing Mountains, in a valley beneath the Ruined City, the ancient Order of the Oyo has for centuries practiced its rites of holy reverie, communing with the spirit realm in grand festivals of drink. Born to a mother's flesh by a Celestial father, the youth known as Mangix was the first to grow up with the talents of both lineages. He trained with the greatest aesthetes of the Order, eventually earning, through diligent drunkenness, the right to challenge for the title of Brewmaster, that appellation most honored among the contemplative malt-brewing sect.

As much drinking competition as mortal combat, Mangix for nine days drank and fought the elder master. For nine nights they stumbled and whirled, chugged and struck, until at last the elder warrior collapsed into a drunken stupor, and a new Brewmaster was named. Now the new, young Brewmaster calls upon the strength of his Oyo forebears to speed his staff. When using magic, it is to his spirit ancestors that he turns. Like all Brewmasters before him, he was sent out from his people with a single mission. He wanders the land, striving toward enlightenment through drink, searching for the answer to the ancient spiritual schism. Hoping to think the single thought that will unite the spirit and physical planes again.

Abilities[edit]

Damage
Magical
Slams the ground, dealing damage and slowing the movement speed and attack rate of nearby enemy units.
Cast Animation: 0.4+0.4
Radius: 400 (Talent 600)
Damage: 90/160/230/300
Move Speed Slow: 25%/35%/45%/55%
Attack Speed Slow: 25/35/45/55
Slow Duration: 4
Cooldown: 13
Mana: 90/100/110/120
Does not pierce spell immunity. Slow persists if debuff was placed before spell immunity and when not dispelled.
Modifiers
Debuff modifier_brewmaster_thunder_clap: Dispellable with any dispel.
A slam of Mangix' mighty keg starts the festivities.

Notes:

  • Thunder Clap first applies the debuff, then the damage.

Cinder Brew icon.png
Affects

Drenches an area in alcohol, causing enemy units to move slower and ignited once they take any spell damage. Duration is increased by 3 seconds when ignited.
Cast Animation: 0.2+0.4
Cast Range: 850
Radius: 400
Move Speed Slow: 24%/28%/32%/36%
Ignition Total Damage: 75/150/225/300 (Talent 97.5/195/292.5/390)
Duration: 5 (Talent 6.5)
Ignite Duration Increase: 3
Cooldown: 20/17/14/11
Mana: 50/60/70/80
Does not pierce spell immunity. Slow persists if the debuff was placed before spell immunity and when not dispelled.
Modifiers
Debuff modifier_brewmaster_cinder_brew: Dispellable with any dispel.
The Order of the Oyo's solution to all problems - another round!

Notes:

  • Cinder Brew's projectile travels at a speed of 1600.
  • Despite the visual effect, Cinder Brew does not affect all units simultaneously upon the projectile reaching the center of the area.
    • Instead, it behaves like a wave that travels outwards, affecting every unit as it travels towards the point, but only units that are within the targeted area.
  • When an enemy with the Cinder Brew debuff takes any spell damage, the duration of the debuff gets extended by 3, and the damage starts.
    • The debuff may be ignited only once. The debuff still slows after getting ignited.
  • The damage interval is based on the debuff's duration, so that it always deals 8 instances of damage. Each instance deals 9.38/18.75/28.13/37.5 (Talent 12.19/24.38/36.56/48.75) damage.
  • Recasting onto the same units does not stack, but refreshes the duration instead. The debuff is not updated to the current level.
    • When recasting on an already ignited enemy, it refreshes the ignited debuff. The ignition does not get reset.
    • The damage interval does not update once ignited. The amount of intervals is hardcoded, so it continues to deal damage until the debuff expires.

Drunken Brawler
Drunken Brawler icon.png
Affects
Self / Enemies
Brewmaster passively gains a chance to evade physical attacks and deal critical damage when attacking. When activated, Brewmaster goes into a drunken brawler state, granting him increased chance to evade or deal critical damage. Brewmaster moves with a varying amount of movement speed, alternating between 20% slower and 40% faster. Lasts 5 seconds.
Cast Animation: 0+0
Passive Evasion: 10%/15%/20%/25%
Passive Critical Chance: 24%
Passive Critical Damage: 145%/160%/175%/190% (Talent 225%/240%/255%/270%)
Active Evasion & Crit Chance Multiplier: 3
Move Speed Slow: 20%
Move Speed Bonus: 40%
Duration: 5
Cooldown: 29/25/21/17
Mana: 35/40/45/50
Modifiers
Buff modifier_brewmaster_drunken_brawler_passive: Undispellable. Persists death.
Buff modifier_brewmaster_drunken_brawler: Dispellable with any dispel.
When Mangix won his title as the Brewmaster of the Order of Oyo, he also claimed his place in the mastery of inebriation.

Notes:

  • Interrupts Brewmaster's channeling abilities on cast.
  • Passively increases attack damage by an average of 10.8%/14.4%/18%/21.6% (Talent 30%/33.6%/37.2%/40.8%) and survivability versus attacks by 11%/18%/25%/33%.
  • While active, has a 30%/45%/60%/75% chance to evade attacks, and a 72% chance to deal critical damage.
    • Increases attack damage by an average of 32.4%/43.2%/54%/64.8% (Talent 90%/100.8%/111.6%/122.4%) and survivability versus attacks by 43%/82%/150%/300% while active.
  • The proc chances of multiple crit sources stack.
    • If two sources of critical strike proc at the same time, the higher multiplier has priority.
    • The sound effects and particles of the critical strike play upon finishing the attack.
  • Drunken Brawler's evasion stacks multiplicatively with other sources of evasion.
  • The movement speed change switches around every second, starting with the bonus.
    • This results in a 40% movement speed bonus in the first, third and fifth second, and a 20% movement speed slow in the second and fourth second.
    • The average movement speed bonus over these 5 seconds is 116%.

Aghanim's Shard upgrade: Primal Split now creates a Void brewling. Has Astral Pulse ability, affecting enemies in a 500 AoE. Applies 20%/30%/40% slow and disarm for 2.5 seconds.

It isn't clear whether Mangix is consciously aware of his potent bond with nature, as it often occurs in the midst of a drunken stupor.

Notes:

  • During Primal Split, Brewmaster is periodically moved to Earth's position. If Earth dies, to Storm's and if Storm dies, to Fire's. This affects multiple things such as:
    • When Primal Split ends, Brewmaster appears at Earth's location. If Earth is dead, at Storm's and if Storm is dead, at Fire's location.
    • Every aura Brewmaster has (including Gem of True Sight icon.png Gem of True Sight and Radiance (Active) icon.png Radiance) is bestowed around Earth, if Earth is dead, around Storm and if Storm is dead, around Fire.
    • Effects which react on heroes' presence (Smoke of Deceit icon.png Smoke of Deceit, Marksmanship, Blur) react on Earth's presence, if Earth is dead, on Storm's and if Storm is dead, on Fire's.
    • Teleporting effects like Divine Favor or Relocate cause the periodic moving of Brewmaster to get canceled, so that the 3 notes above do not apply anymore.
  • The brewlings spawn always in the same formation, forming an equilateral triangle (or a square) which fits within a 100 radius circle.
    • All brewlings' facing angle equals Brewmaster's facing angle on cast.
    • Brewmaster Earth icon.png Earth is always spawned 100 range in front of Brewmaster's cast location.
    • Brewmaster Storm icon.png Storm is always spawned 50 range behind and 86.603 range to the left of Brewmaster's cast location.
    • Brewmaster Fire icon.png Fire is always spawned 50 range behind and 86.603 range to the right of Brewmaster's cast location.
  • With Aghanim's Shard icon.png Aghanim's Shard, the brewlings spawn in a square formation instead, that fits in a 100 radius circle.
    • Brewmaster Earth icon.png Earth is always spawned 100 range in front of Brewmaster's cast location.
    • Brewmaster Storm icon.png Storm is always spawned 100 range to the left of Brewmaster's cast location.
    • Brewmaster Fire icon.png Fire is always spawned 100 range to the right of Brewmaster's cast location.
    • Unknown Unit icon.png Void is always spawned 100 range behind Brewmaster's cast location.
  • The brewlings are creep-heroes and ancient creeps, making them interact differently with several spells. For detailed interactions follow the two links.
  • With Aghanim's Scepter icon.png Aghanim's Scepter, the brewlings gain the Primal Split Cancel sub-ability.
    • Casting the ability immediately ends Primal Split. Brewmaster re-appears at the location of the brewling which used the sub-ability.
  • The level 25 Talent talent grants the drunken brawler modifier to all brewlings, which grants them the passive evasion and critical strike based on its current level.
    • Since the ability itself is not granted, they cannot use the active component to enhance the values.

  • During the fade time, Storm can cast spells and perform attacks without breaking the invisibility.
    • Those attacks do apply the 140/200/260 damage to the target.
  • The bonus damage is not applied when attacking buildings out of the invisibility, but is applied against wards.
  • The invisibility is lost upon reaching the cast point of spells, or upon launching an attack.

Gameplay[edit]

Roles: Carry Carry Initiator Initiator Durable Durable Disabler Disabler Nuker Nuker
Complexity: ★★★
Playstyle: For nine days Mangix fought the master of his order, both warriors swilling and striking in equal measure, until at last the elder collapsed into a drunken stupor. Having claimed the title of Brewmaster, Mangix now wanders the land as a Drunken Brawler, swinging and evading with unpredictable finesse. Under one arm he holds a great keg, and not merely for storing his Cinder Brew. Mangix drenches enemies in alcohol, disorienting them before slamming the barrel down with a Thunder Clap. Rumor around taverns is that the Brewmaster is actually composed of three elementals, and should one catch him sufficiently intoxicated, one may just witness this Primal Split in action.

Trivia[edit]

  • Brewmaster, like Storm Spirit minimap icon.png Storm Spirit, Ember Spirit minimap icon.png Ember Spirit and Earth Spirit minimap icon.png Earth Spirit, was a Pandaren in DotA. However, he was re-skinned due to copyright issues with Blizzard Entertainment. His design is similar to that of a red panda, rather than the giant panda that the Pandaren in DotA were based on.
  • Primal Split's ▶️ sound effect upon spawning the 3 brewlings is based on this ▶️ laughter response line of Brewmaster.
