Attributes

For a list of heroes sorted by attributes, see Table of hero attributes.

Attributes are the main statistics of all heroes that independently determine most scaling statistics. These attributes are strength, agility, and intelligence. Attributes are gained when a hero levels up, obtains a Talent talent, buys certain items, or uses certain abilities. Illusions benefit from attributes.

Primary Attribute[]

Every hero has a primary attribute, which modifies their main attack damage per 1 point of primary attribute. A hero's primary attribute heavily impacts and commonly even defines the hero's role and how they are played. For example, intelligence heroes are typically more dependent on abilities. A hero's primary attribute typically grows faster than the other two attributes.

Abilities Modifying Primary Attributes

Strength[]

Main Article: Strength

Strength is a measure of a hero's toughness and endurance. Strength determines a hero's maximum health and health regeneration. Heroes with strength as their primary attribute can be hard to kill, so they often take initiator and tank roles, initiating fights and taking most of the damage from enemy attacks.

Every point in strength increases:

  • Maximum health by 22.
  • Health regeneration by 0.09.

For strength heroes, every point in strength also increases main attack damage by 1.

Agility[]

Main Article: Agility

Agility is a measure of a hero's swiftness and dexterity. Agility determines a hero's armor and attack speed. Heroes with agility as their primary attribute tend to be more dependent on their physical attacks and items, and are usually capable of falling back on their abilities in a pinch. Agility heroes often take carry and gank roles.

Every point in agility increases:

  • Armor by 1/6.
  • Attack speed by 1.

For agility heroes; every point in agility also increases main attack damage by 1.

For universal heroes; every point in agility also increases main attack damage by 0.7.

Agility Heroes[]

Because Agility heroes are the only class of heroes to gain both damage and attack speed as their primary attribute increases, they tend to have the highest physical damage output as the game progresses. This makes them scale very well with offensive items. They tend to have limited disabling capabilities or nukes; almost all their abilities augment their physical capabilities or serve as positioning or escape mechanisms. This tends to make them much more vulnerable and weak in the early game when strong offensive disables and nukes dictate the flow of kills, but also means that, with good items under their belts, they will be the ones delivering the greatest amount of damage in the late game, while also being dealt the least amount of physical damage as a result of their high armor. Agility heroes have a roughly even split between being melee or being ranged, and fit primarily into carry and ganker roles.

There are 31 agility heroes in Dota 2.

Below is a table of all heroes with agility as their primary attribute. The growth columns indicate how much the base values increase for each hero level.

Intelligence[]

Main Article: Intelligence

Intelligence is a measure of a hero's wit and wisdom. Intelligence determines a hero's maximum mana, mana regeneration and magic resistance. Heroes with intelligence as their primary attribute tend to rely on their abilities to deal damage or help others. Intelligence heroes often take support, gank, and pusher roles.

Every point in intelligence increases:

  • Maximum mana by 12.
  • Mana regeneration by 0.05.
  • Magic resistance by 0.1%.

For intelligence heroes, every point in intelligence also increases main attack damage by 1.

For universal heroes, every point in intelligence also increases main attack damage by 1.

The mana bonus is only applied to the max mana pool. The hero's current mana is not increased but keeps the current mana percentage.

Intelligence Heroes[]

Intelligence heroes tend to have a greater number of active abilities compared to other heroes; all intelligence heroes have at least three active abilities, with a large number of them having all four of their abilities being actives, and some even having 5 or more. Their larger mana pools and higher mana regeneration rates go a long way to help them use these abilities frequently. As a whole, intelligence heroes have by far the greatest number of disabling capabilities, making them essential in most lineups.

The items they build also tend to be highly caster based, since those items primarily provide intelligence. With a few exceptions, most intelligence heroes are ranged. Most intelligence heroes rely on their spells for damage, but in most cases, these have static damage values only increased by spell damage amplification or damage manipulation. They do not scale well into the late game, so that most intelligence heroes peak during the early to mid game, where their spells deal the most damage in relation to enemy health pools and resistance, and then start to fall off in the late game. Because of this, they often fit into support and ganker roles. There are exceptions to this though, some intelligence heroes have scaling abilities which make them excellent in the late game.

There are 30 intelligence heroes in Dota 2.

Below is a table of all heroes with intelligence as their primary attribute. The growth columns indicate how much the base values increase for each hero level.

Universal[]

Main Article: Universal

Universal heroes are like jack of all trades and benefit from every attribute. While they dont gain that much from building a single main attribute, their strength lies in the flexibility to choose items based on their specific abilities and bonuses not so much on the item's attributes. So they can always switch between the support and carry roles based on their itembuild, not bound by a main attribute.

Every point of / / attribute increases:

Generally speaking, a single-type attribute becoming a universal hero almost always has the effect of significantly increasing attack damage, with very few exceptions. If the sum of both your secondary stats is more than 42.8% (0.3/0.7 = 0.428) of your primary attribute, changing from single-attribute to universal will result in much greater attack damage than their single-attributed counterpart.

For example:

Let's say you have a hero whose main attribute is currently agility, and has a stat of 80 strength, 200 agility, and 40 intelligence. Currently, they gain 1 damage per point of agility, thus they gain +200 base damage (1x200 = 200). If they were to change to universal, the hero now gains 0.7 damage per point of attribute for all 3 attributes. Now, the hero gains +224 base damage (200*0.7)+(80*0.7)+(40*0.7) = 224. This resulted in a 12% base damage increase because the sum of the hero's secondary stats totalled at 60% of their previous primary attribute (80+40)/100 = 0.6.

Let's take the same agility hero but change their stats to 47 strength, 200 agility, and 30 intelligence. Under this setup, they still gain +200 base damage bonus. However, if they were to turn universal with these stats, they now only gain 193.4 base damage, rounded down to 193. This resulted in over a 3% base damage reduction because the sum of their secondary stats was only 38.5% of their primary attribute, resulting in reduced base damage bonus (47+30)/200 = 0.385.

As a proof of concept, let's use the same agility hero but this time, provide them with the stats of 42.8 strength, 200 agility, and 42.8 intelligence. With these stats, the hero will gain exactly 200 base damage (42.8*0.7)+(200*0.7)+(42.8*0.7) = 199.92, rounded to 200. The hero has now gained the exact same amount of damage as though they were simply an agility hero because their secondary stats are just within the break-even point of 42.8% of their previous primary attribute.

Items Granting Attributes[]

Each attribute has its own set of items that focus on boosting it. These items are different for each attribute. In order to categorize them, they're split into 5 different sections:

  • Tiny Items consist only of Iron Branch and boosts all attributes by 1. This item is usually taken as a starting item to make up for gaps in a hero's statistics.
  • Small Items boost their associated attribute by 3, or all attributes by 2. These items are usually taken as starting items to make up for gaps in a hero's statistics.
  • Medium Items boost their associated attribute by 6, or all attributes by 4. Though generally not taken to increase attributes, these items are usually components of many midrange items.
  • Large Items boost their associated attribute by 10, or all attributes by 6. These items are usually components in more powerful items, and almost never bought just for the stats.
  • Ultimate Items boost their associated attribute by 25, or all attributes by 15. These are mostly used to make late game items because of how expensive they are and how cost-ineffective they are per point of stats.
  • Besides the items in the table, Ghost Scepter is another basic item that boosts all attributes by 5. All other items that grant attributes are upgrades, and are all derived from one or multiple of the 17 items listed below.
